Psiphon is an important improvement over other browser proxy solutions because the address of a psiphon proxy server is, for all intents and purposes, impossible for your government’s censors to discover.
Your friend can download psiphon from this page and from the psiphon site. Installation instructions are also available, and if she encounters difficulties, she can get interactive technical support from our addresses at the bottom of this page.
Once your friend has installed psiphon, she would create credentials (login ID & password) for each user (e.g. you), inform you of her proxy server’s IP address and credentials, and then you would be able to access her proxy—and browse without firewall restriction—from any browser.
The folks at psiphon are working on a second-generation version which will not require you to have a friend install something (and which will allow you to create new login credentials for your friends), but this will be rolled out only toward the end of 2008.
Because psiphon is a CGI proxy, there is some content (like Flash) which it may pass imperfectly. If you need to access that content, you’ll need to step up to a proxy client.
An alternative to psiphon is Circumventor, another “personal” proxy server your friend could install; it’s harder to configure than psiphon, and it doesn’t require login, so it’s more public.
